Halloween costume practice

Halloween is almost here.  Have you had your Halloween costume practice yet? 

What?  You aren't' familiar with a costume practice?  Read on. 

Your costume practice is an important part of your costume presentation. 

Instead of waiting until the day of to put on your costume, it might serve you better to have a full dress rehearsal a few days before the big day.  

Put on all the pieces of your costume and do your makeup, hair, etc.  It's also important to time yourself doing this so you will have an educated idea about prep time. 

This weekend Jon had a makeup run through (I was the makeup artist).  We found out that it will take an hour to get him into full make up and hair for his costume (it's top secret).  We also want to change a few things, so we're having another run through on Wednesday.

What's so cool about a costume run through?  You might find out that you're missing a piece of your costume or realize that what you thought might work doesn't.  Isn't it wonderful to have the gift of time to get that missing piece or experiment with new techniques?

The kindness of stragers

Have you ever done something nice for a stranger?  Have you ever been on the receiving end? 

I've done both and find them equally rewarding. 

Yesterday, I went to Disneyland for Jon's birthday and we were the recipients of the kindness of strangers. 

There's this thing at Disneyland called a "Fast Pass" and it lets you go to the front of the line of certain rides (you're limited to the number of times you can do it and the fast pass options aren't always available). 

As we stood in line for the Indiana Jones ride, a group of four strangers walked by asking, "Party of two?" 

I raised my hand to indicate that we were indeed a party of two.  They had two extra fast passes and wanted to share them with someone - and that someone (actually someones) ended up being Jon and me. 

As a result, we got to get out of the regular line and walk all the way to the front of the fast pass line and get on the ride.  How kind is that?  

Just thought that sharing the kindness of strangers would spark something inside of you that can spread more love to everyone you meet.

Rule of thumb for managing people

The following comes from Rules of Thumb:  A Life Manual -- Brilliant Guestimates, Shortcuts, and a Few Shots in the Dark by Tom Parker:

As a manager, expect 80 percent of your work to be done by 20 percent of your staff.  Also, expect 90 percent of your headaches/problems to come from 10 percent of your staff.
